YDL will host three writers as part of our MLK day celebration. Each artist will have time to share their work and explain how writing fits into their everyday lives, followed by a group conversation.
As part of our city-wide celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. day, YDL-Michigan will host a Young Black Writers forum with three authors of varying styles: poetry, fiction, and youth picture books. Each author will have 20-25 minutes to read from their recent works, talk about their other life activities and community work, and explain how they embed writing practices into their daily lives. This will be followed by a group conversation and Q+A, with a few pre-arranged questions to spark discussion.
Our presenting writers are Darius Simpson (poetry), Jenna Dawson (youth), and Kayla Chenault (fiction). Copies of their books will be available for sale during the event.
Desirae Simmons will be our conversation moderator.
This will be a hybrid event -- live inside the library AND live-streamed on Facebook, and the recording will be shared online afterward.
